Out of the Blue

I just received a phone call through my fax from a guy called Luke in Sydney. He stumbled on my sit and thought he’s ring and say how much he liked the photos. I like Luke’s style.

Normally i might get an email, but he took the time to ring me using his work phone.

Brian Brian Blanchard was last week’s portrait…

Brian

Brian Blanchard was last week’s portrait of the week. He was introduced to me by a friend who used to sell him coffee. Brian is one of those old guys that really don’t seem all that old. Of course us “youngsters” differently around them but they give of the vibe of being young and full of energy.

Brian is a painter. He moved to Tasmania in the 80’s and lives in a house he and his wife renovated in Trevallyn. His wife, , is also a painter and there is a distinct lack of wall space throughout all the rooms I walk through. Some scenes, some still life, some portraits including Brian’s latest self portrait which is sitting almost life size on his easel. Apparently the model for this self portrait is one of the only people with time to sit for him.

Brian has a few trademarks, I hadn’t known him long but I knew that his smile was well known, his wit and the cap. Well, it’s not really the cap, it’s the caps. There are quite a few apparently and all the self portraits that are visible in his studio have a cap.

I was acully offered a painting to keep, after about 15 minutes of being shown many different styles and sizes, I gave up. The choosing of a painting was going to take a while, so I will return and swap a print for a painting. I’m looking forward to returning for that painting.

Tarkine

I just heard back from the guy who is putting together the book on the Tarkine.

They have cut down the 1200 submitted photos to 200, of which 3 are mine.

This is not the end, there are only about 60 images going in the book so the images still have along way to go before I might get paid. If they use one image it’s a loss, 2 images it’s a minor profit, 3 images is more of a profit. This is counting for money only not the time it took to shoot (4 days).

I guess time will tell.

I’ll probably get around to putting some new images online in the sales section soon, the unwanted tarkine landscapes. They are still good, just not what they were looking for.

Mono

After convincing one friend the genius of a monopod she went out and bought one. She’s traveling at the moment and I’m sure she is using it up a storm. I didn’t own a monopod till a couple of days ago. So I’m excited about it. But I haven’t used it yet, I haven’t even put a camera on it yet. Someday I will.

It’s getting close to awards season again, so that means narrowing down images to put in. I can choose 5 wedding and 5 others for the Tassie Awards and just any 5 for the nationals.

The idea is the tassie awards give you comments to go and change the photos so they will be better in the nationals. I am always in Melbourne and miss the tassie awards, so I don’t really get any comments.

There is also a bit of difference between the judging styles, Alice Bennett an image into the Tasmanian Awards last year and I think it didn’t go anywhere, she entered it in the Nationals and it got a Gold Award. It was a straight shot, not alot of work done to it. I think down here the highly worked shots will wow the judges more than in Sydney, and the other way around where a good clean unworked shot can get a better award at the Nationals and not do well in Tasmania.

I’ve got a month to make up my mind.

As with every photo, there is a story. So i’m go…

As with every photo, there is a story.

So i’m going to share some stories.

Some good, some bad.

i’ll see what i can do.
