Ruby is small, furry and very friendly. She is the first fur child of Alex and Jake. During the shoot she pretty much did what ever she wanted including discovering some great things to sniff, balls to chase and other strange four legged furry creatures to look at.

How awesome is Charlie (he’s the one with the tongue hanging out). Erin came in for some shots and asked if Charlie could come along. Of course if your dog is friendly awesome and posed up a storm they are very welcome in the studio. Erin did a pretty good job too, but well… Charlie did steal the show a little.  Erin is pretty talented check out her designs over at Red Essy Designs and also at the Apron Market this weekend down at the Seaport.

I met up with Clare and Jason a few weeks ago in the dying days of autum to take advantage of some leaves and a little bit of end of season light. Their dog came along and behaved really well… well, as long as we wanted her to run about all over the place, destroy sticks and generally be a dog doing dog things she was fantastic.The peanut in Clare’s belly was also most co-operative. Good luck guys on your soon to be arrived little one, look forward to meeting him/her!

Remember back in Feburary when we ran our Valentine’s Day Competition? Well here are the winners David, Danielle and their little fur child Louis. Louis is a bit like me, will do tricks (like sit and stay) for food.

We still have the fur children, Mouse (top), Kaba (dog) and Kooshan, they are getting to know Saffron quite well now. They don’t seem to mind the crying too much.

How cool is Alfie. So much personality and he managed to find the mud within 5 minutes of arriving at the park. Someone had to have a bath after their shoot!

When I shot Nichola and Drew’s weddingearlier this year they didn’t have a dog. The story goes that Dexter was advertised in the paper on their wedding day, they they drove from Binalong Bay to somewhere up the Tamar to check him out the day after the wedding. Fell in love with him and then added him to the family. He’s a bit cute and avery much loved!

Unfortunantly, George is not avaliable for catwalk work. He is a dog and doesn’t do cats very well.

This was a fantastic session down at Clifton. Great weather, people and a super cute puppy who is now a lot bigger since the session was shot back in April.

One of the best parts of being a photographer is meeting great people, and Brianna Tim and Annabelle fall squarely into the “glad to met them” basket. Locals who ran off to the big city and then are back to raise their little family. I dare you to not be a little gaga over how cute Annabelle looks in her grey hoodie. Brianna is also a fantastic make up artist, check out her facebook page here and if you are in need of wedding make up give her a call.

I had such a fantastic time meeting and photographing Brad and Tenille, they are the proud parents of Aya (baby) and Millie (Cute mini puppy). Aya is such a beautiful little girl and full of life. Millie loves Aya as much as her parents, so cute seeing them together. Add in the fantastic home that Brad and Tenille have created and I just know Aya is such a lucky little girl.

I just finished this shoot with Tamara and Alfie, I had to rush back to the office to download this image. I kinda like it lots, Alfie has a heap of character and is such a wooly playful mud seeking puppy! You can find another shot of Alfie in the animal folio on the Photobat facebook page.

She’s 7. Can you believe it? I took some photos of her Humans too, will post them soon.

When I first read that there were Turtles in Vanuatu I was excited, I really wanted to get as close as possible to an animal I hadn’t seen before. I like turtles, but it’s been at a distance. That all changed on Moso Island.

We read that there was s Turtle Rookery on Tranquility Island (also known as Moso). We wanted to get there but really didn’t want to do the half day tour and see things that didn’t really interest us before we got to the rookery. After mentioning this to the guys at Havannah (the best place we have ever stayed) they arranged a trip for us on their little speed boat across the harbour to have our own look at the rookery.

I didn’t know what to expect, and after trekking through the jungle from the jetty we emerged into the rookery. Essentially it’s a heap of big white plastic tubs filled with turtles. The turtles are collected by local villages when they hatch and are bought to the rookery where they are paid for and then looked after until they are big enough to have a better chance of surviving in the wild.

The Hawksbill Turtle is critically endangered meaning that the species numbers have decreased, or will decrease, by 80% within three generations. So that means there isn’t that many about. To be in a little area with over a hundred of this amazing and beautiful reptile was fantastic.

The little ones are fragile and not able to be handled, but as you go down the tubs they get bigger and bigger until you get to the 2 year old turtles in the final cement tanks. These larger turtles are ready for release. The rookery relies on tourists coming by and sponsoring the turtles and releasing them. Of course, we had to do this. We picked up, measured it up and Vikashni walked it down beach and released it. TM (As we called it) was tagged and each time it is seen thy researchers will send us an email to let us know how it’s going. Very cool.

This is a first for me, photographing 2 horses. And could i get them to look at the camera and smile? Well, looking at the camera kinda succeeded but I have no idea what a horse smile looks like…

A few moths ago I was lucky to spend some time with the animals out at the RSPCA. They were all excited and being nice to me as they knew that I was going to be photographing them for the main month images for the 2010 RSPCA Calendar. Now the calendar is all ready and waiting for people to buy it. If you like animals, you will love this. Each day of the year features a different pet and there are some very cute ones there.

Congrats to Ashlee, Marcus, Brooke and Keeley. Yes I caved and gave away my copy! have to get another one now!)

Ok, a quick little post becaue i’m so behind in blogging. There will be more focus on posting a heap of images over writing heaps of words for the next couple of weeks… That said lets jump into Mandy and James’s shoot.

This was fun. Remember back when it was stinking hot a few weeks ago, that is when I caught up with James and Mandy for this shoot. Mandy’s nice bosslady Susan from Jim Hughes and Sons gave her a voucher that she received at a charity auction, she’s a very nice boss! 4 dogs is always a challenge, but I’ve never backed down from shooting lots of doggies and it was another win. These guys seem to like their animals, lots of dogs some sheep, I think there was a horse, or that may have been on the way, anyway, lots of animals (and comers too for you grammar nuts!).

I also managed to get lost finding their house, but getting lost is always fun when you find an awesome location to take photos at (and get splinters)

I love magazines; there are a few piles of them at home. I’m always excited when a new one arrives in the post office box. Today’s delivery was doubly exciting. Capture is a great read for photographers, covers a lot of interesting and important things relating to the industry of shooting everything in Australia. The current issue is their inaugural Annual filled with what Editor Marc Gaffen describes as “a selection of the finest work produced in the last 12 months.”
Heaps of good photos, including the one above taken at Brad and Elisha’s wedding. There were 5 wedding photos chosen for the annual and I got one of them. Quite exciting to get an image in there, I can’t imagine how many were submitted.
I’m off to buy these doggies some treats…

I caught up with Susie and Adrian a few weeks ago, had a great time exploring all the photo opportunities in the house. Also Theodore was very good to us, these guys really really love Theo and it was important to get a great shot of him. He certainly had heaps of character!

I’m looking forward to it, going to be great to meet some dogs and their owners

The last few weeks have been a little crazy, seems like I’ve only spent a couple of days in the office. Actually, I have only spent a couple of days in the office. We have been all over the place, started off with a bit of speaking over in Perth WA. Great place, great photographers, great people, great food, great wine, great coffee and great grates too (you know I love urban shots!).

The whole reason for the trip was to do a presentation to about 80 photographers along side David Oliver, Christian Fletcher and Ric Syme. I really enjoyed the event and had heaps of good feedback. While out west I finally got to visit Jorgensen Albums, this is the place I get all my wedding and portrait albums hand made by a team of skilled and passionate people. I’ve been using these guys for about 6 years now, talked on the phone, emailed and sent Christmas cards to, but never met them in person. They were all taller than I expected.

It was fascinating to see all that went into making the albums and the amount of staff working away. I’ve got some images I’ll post soon. Then it was time for not working time. Summer is coming and I can see it’s going to be very busy so any time I can get at the moment is spent with Vee.

We managed to pack a lot in 2 day, both in things we did and things we ate / drank. There was catching up with photographers, checking out galleries, drinking wine, tasting cheese, waiting for sunsets that were always obscured by clouds, and then also some more wine tasting. The Margaret River / Dunsborough area were incredible, and I am looking forward to heading back there one day.

Then home for a couple of days and just as I got back into the swing of things it was off to Hobart. Hobart was a mix of Vee time, client time, learning time and speaking time. It was all based around a presentation I did for the Tasmanian Division of the Australian Institute of Photography. Vee also managed to into the talking spirit, doing a presentation to the happy snappers on social media. I was proud of her little talk! My talk was about evolving in photography from shooting body parts to shooting weddings and other stuff.

When that was all wrapped it was off to home for a few hours, a quick trip to the office and then on a big metal bird to the home of iconic music houses and water crossing structures. Yes, Sydney. A few days up there learning things, getting inspired and hanging around with some awesome photographers.

So I’m back now fully inspired and ready for action. There will be some changes about the place, nothing too major and all very cool. It may even involve some new products and saying good bye to some old ones. Looking forward to new ways of processing my images, getting new things up on the website, getting back to some old ways of shooting and catching up with all the clients who are coming back for their Christmas photos. Anyways, hope you are well and things are moving at a manageable pace in the right direction for you.

Sunday was a bit strange… There was this blue stuff in the sky and a big bright thing too. So Vee, Kaba and I, like the rest of Launceston, went out to expore in what seemed like a Spring day.

The most exciting thing was seeing a seal swinning up into the Gorge. The Gorge is still very flooded and we watched it fighting the water for about 20 minutes. Vee worked on getting some shots of it, while i concentraited on the little doggie at my feet. Kaba didn’t like being on the bridge too much but was happy for all the pats and compliments of the passers by.

I think this is the most massive-est post I have ever done. Why not! These are the people who turned up for our cupcake / open day and all deserve to be thanked for eating small cakes for the little animals. We managed to raise just under $500, so I kicked in the rest to make it an even $500, which we will be donating to the RSPCA.

Way too much writing on the Batblog yesterday. So here is a picture of a dog.

I have said it before, and i’ll say it again. Winter is a fantastic time for having some photos taken. It was Sam and Pip’s turn to do their engagement portrait session. We started out at their place as there was someone special to photography. Elsie is Pip’s old cat who has a lot of attitude in looks, but is really just a sweet little cat.

You can see she loves her scratches. Once we has said goodbye to Elsie we headed down to Duck Reach, an old power station hided in the suburbs of Launceston. Usually when I photograph here it’s straight to the rocks, but as the light was amazing we stayed on the bridge and around the station itself.

Sam and Pip were so easy to photography, there was so much laughter and you can really tell how much on love they are. I am really looking forward to their wedding in Avoca later in the year.

I first entered the Australian Professional Photography Awards in 2001, and got nothing. I had no idea what I was doing back then, I had talked to a photographer and sent in what I had. So nothing came of it, the next year I was a bit more on the ball and picked up a couple of awards, and have been getting some ever since.

This year I received the honour of Master of Photography with 1 Gold Bar from The Australian Institute of Professional Photography. I was presented during the awards ceremony in Sydney with a gold bar to be added onto my Masters ribbon.

How this all works is that for every silver award you get one point and ever gold award you get two points. If you receive 5 points with in 4 years you become an Associate, I received this in 2003. The next step is that if you receive 10 additional points within five years you become a Master of Photography, I received this in 2006. From then every additional 10 points gained within 5 years gets you an Gold Bar.

This is Kaba, he has not been on the Batblog for a while. He just destroyed one of his toys, which wasn’t supposed to be one of his toys.
It was a team effort, Mouse (the cat) likes my wife’s home made plush toys and was making a batch of rabbits. Mouse took one of the half finished rabbits off the work table and put it ont he floor. kaba saw this and knew he had a new toy. The first we knew of this was when he was running about madly with it in his mouth, kind of like he had caught it hunting. So rabbit, after about 3 months is now just stuffing and polarfleece on the floor. I guess its hunting time again for Kaba.

 I met Elsie at Pip and Sam’s place when we were setting out to do some engagement portraits. More of the engagement portraits later, but here is Elsie the cat getting a nice rub from both Sam and Pip. This cat was very talkative and had a unique voice and her own little bit of non aggressive attitude going on.

Another year and the Epson Tasmanian Professional Photography Awards have been run and won.

This year I managed to pick up 8 Silver awards over 4 categories.

Plus thanks to all my fantastic clients, I am really lucky to have so many fantastic people to photography and share happy times in their lives. I love my job love sharing it with you all.

A few weeks ago V and I headed out to Longford to the happy chef to help celebrate Wendy and Graham’s 40^th Wedding anniversary. I basically grew up with this family and spent many night on the farm out at Forth with their giant family ( I say giant because I’m not tall, and these guys are generally very tall). So here is a couple of photos of the family from an impromptu 5 minute shoot on the day, including Matt and Megans dog Jasper, you will be seeing a little more of Matt and Megan as we are shooting their wedding later in the year.

Casey and Mack came in for a fun shoot the other week. Casey moved away and had to leave Mack behind with her parents, so her boyfriend gave her a session so she at least had some photos of him about.

Mack was very good, very interested in everything that was going on.

You may remember Ava from her first shoot last year. Well now she has hit the big 1 and we had another visit to get some “grown up” shots. This time her grandparents were around to have some photos to, plus we caught up with those very cute animals again.

Can you belive this is the first time these guys have had a family portrait? With these cute girls?

Let along the cute, and slighty scared puppy.

Then there was a Princess and a Fairy Godmother in the garden.

There are occasionally some posts that slip through the batblog-a-sphere and don’t get posted. Over the next few weeks I will be trying to catch up. So we will start with this shoot of the Young Family, shot just before Christmas. Vicki was a bridesmaid in a wedding I show many years ago, I think it may have been in my second season. The session involved was mainly about getting some shots of her two beautiful girls who were an absolute delight and a bit of fun to photograph. Plus the kittens, real kittens and a grown up one! 

A few photos taken on the drive back from the East Coast on Australia Day, we were up there to shoot a wedding on the Sunday and stayed over to have a good breakfast and take some photos for fun on the way home.

We all had a really nice breakfast at the Village Store and More in St Helens, which has fantastic coffee, great breakfast menu, an Aussie rock singing chef and apologetic waitresses who only apologise about the chef’s singing. I wasn’t worried about the singing, I recognised it as Ruck Rover and surprised the chef by knowing who they were. The place is vintage, you spend most of your time reading the old magazines and newspapers that cover the tables.

On the drive back we stopped in Derby, which is V and my regular stopping spot on the drive back. Zakk and I explored the old grandstand (more photos to come) and then we all discovered that the Devonshire Tea’s at Berrie’s cafe are quite good, plus they gave Kaba a drink.

Another shoot from way back that got missed in the batblog system. Its here now. Evie was great and so was that cool looking cat!

Sorry about that, I kinda disappeared for a week or two there. I’m happy to say I’m alive, refreshed and ready to take a heap of photos this year. I will be digging into my emails and messages in the next couple of days, expect a call.

Over the last couple of weeks I did a few shoots, and also the weeks before Christmas were crazy, so the batblog is a feeling bit neglected.

Never to fear, it will be going completely nuts in the next couple of weeks to get updated. There may be a little less writing, that way I don’t have to think too much and the photos can get our of the hard drives and see the light of day.

I got a cool, heavy based frypan for Christmas. It was sitting on the bench about to be washed and seasoned for the first time when I left the room for a second. When I returned, Kooshan was sitting in it. This is a photo of Kooshan a minute later sitting in his Laundry… or as we like to call it, his cell. He spends a lot of time there.

Kaba got a bone thing, and wasn’t sure what to do with it. He decided it was precious and spent a lot of time protecting it and not eating it.

This is an older one of Mouse I hadn’t posted yet. He is helping Vikashni with her sewing.

And this is my pretty wife.

So, what does this year hold for Photobat? Well, soon we will see what is behind door 36… Plus a bucket load of weddings this month, quite a few portraits and as usual, a heap of stuff that we have no idea about yet.

Shane: “No”
Alan: sigh of relief

The edwards family are growing up and moving out, leaving Col and Jill the tak of downsizing their home. So this shoot was the family portrait to say goodbye to the family home. We shot ont he stpes because all the kids had their first day of school photos on them.

And I had to take a few photos of Col and his other child who is called Harley. Col uses it as his transportation for fishing trips. I like the idea of just picking up the rod, jumping on the bike and zooming off to a nice spot to drop the line in.

Plus, as ususal… the dog shot!

This is Molly, she lives somewhere around York Town Square in Launceston. She’s quite friendly and always up for a pat. I guess i’ve known Molly since Photobat moved into Holyman House, which is coming up on 3 years.

I reccomend spending some time in York Town Square and meeting Molly, it’s just nice to take some time out and pat cats.

If anyone knows Molly’s owner, please tell them to get in touch so I can give them a copy of the photo.

Our other Cat, less famous than Kooshan and harder to spot as he dashes from under couch to under bed to sink to under char. Just like a mouse.

I’m not in Crete at the moment, but not at home either… back with details next week

I like cats. I think they are cute and quite good leg warmers in winter.

Kooshan is not a cat. He is pure trouble.

Example 1

We had pancakes and left the bowl on the sink with some water in it. A few minutes later Kooshan comes in with half his face wet from cleaning the bowl.

Example 2 – 5 minutes later

I made a coffee. I put the milk jug on the bench. I sat down to enjoy some blog reading. I hear a loud band in the kitchen. Kooshan had his head stuck in the milk jug, unfortunately he managed to free himself before I got the camera. Here is the evidence on his face. Take a closer look to the right side of his face, now covered in milk.

Kooshan is now in the laundry. That is the place where he goes when he has been naughty. He spends a lot of time there. Once I found him in the cutlery drawer, it was only open an inch but he managed to get in. Dam cat. I had to clean all the cutlery. Then there was the time he broke the front window of the house, distracted me so I scrapped the side of the car, escaped out the fly screens and investigated the neighbours rubbish, amongst many many many other things.

We have another cat, he is quite nice. He spends very little time in the laundry.

Yesterday was vet visit day for the cats. Mouse needed a booster injection and Kooshan, well, he needed to have a shave. We try to groom Kooshan but he does not really like it and we don’t really like getting scratched so it’s off to the vet to be knocked out and let them get rid of the matts.

Mouse was fine… well after I managed to get him out from under the couch and also the bed. I have no idea how he knew he was going to the vet.

And the final results of Kooshan’s hair cut. Remember he is the evil one and I have no problems about publicly embarrassing him. Both the kittens got a clean bill of health and Kooshan especially enjoyed his car ride, he sits on Vikashni’s lap and looks out the window while Mouse has to stay in the cat carrier on the back seat.

Way back in April Rob and Susan were expecting an arrival. So I went out to take some photos. I had heard stories about Rob’s childhood feline companion Arnie, so had to get him in a few shots.

After doing a pregnancy shoot for Susan and Rob we waited for little Max to show up so we could do a newborn shoot… we waited… he waited… we waited… he waited… and finally he decided to show his face well after he was supposed to. Max arrived the day before my wedding so we had to wait until he was a little older to do shoot. I’m sure you will agree it was worth the wait. He was a great little guy to photograph, pity about the dad (just kidding Rob!!)

The shoot ended with a very loud example of Max’s lungs. But by the time we got there we had the all the shots. I even got another one of Arnie!

After Athens we headed to Crete, initially we were planning on heading to somewhere else but trying to get the maze of flight and ferry connections to work, Vikashni and I decided that Crete was our best option.

We stayed at three very different places0, the best being Kato Zakros a beachside village that was tiny. Fantastic to wake up to the sounds of the water and just walk a few meters to the Tavern for breakfast.

Even with thephrasebook we couldn’t communicate that well, we pointed at words and phrases and they pointed at their eyes… it seems that when you go to have your afternoon sit down, reading glasses are not high on the to take list.

Some photos from a little old town called Athens. Things that first hit us about Athens were, the amount of graffiti, how dirty it was and in some places, the amount of cats.

Really, the fascinating ancient sites would be much better if there wasn’t a whole city around it! We stayed in Plaka, right in the old part of Athens. It was really good to get up and just have a wander before the tourists really arrived. One of the most dangerous things in Athens is probably Bretto’s.

I had the great pleasure of shooting little Ava’s first big photo shoot. Kylie and Travis have a beautiful little girl and an equally beautiful home and pets. The nursery was set up son nicely and included this big red chair which we dragged outside so we could get some good light on it.

And how could i not take a few shots of the furry kids. This little collection of animals were so much fun and very friendly The bunny has survived having a stroke and lives in the back yard with the dog, can you believe that!

It’s been too long since the puppy Kaba has featured in this blog. He recently had a hair cut and so it was portrait time again.

I didn’t start out to take his photo, just some photos of his half eaten toys, but he didn’t like me playing with his things.

Many of his toys are won at various shows and carnivals, you know the kind of cheap toy that you win when you sucseed in getting close to your target number by strategically placing balls into a clown’s head.

 I can’t imagine what he would do if we actually won a really big prize on a sideshow….probably tear a hole in it and use if for a bed…. maybe…

Late last year I had the opportunity to head down to Howden to shoots some photos of Denise, Harko, the baby bump and the horse. I had never had such a large prop for a photo (the horse… not the bump!). It was quite nice to be in a field in such a beautiful part of Tasmania I hadn’t been to before. Plus I had never shot a pregnancy shoot with a horse before, he was very well behaved too.

It was interesting having a chat with Harko too, he’s a scientist working on saving the Tasmanian Devils from their facial tumor disease. It was fascinating to hear what what happening and sad to hear about the creature’s bleak looking future.

Skip forward and we welcomed little Niham to the family! Such a nice little baby and very well behaved. We didn’t even notice her when we arrived, she was a sleep on the couch.

I always love a good hand shot and can never get enough of baby expressions!

When I showed the photos to Denise and Harko, Harko was about to go back into the field and be part of a group setting up social networking for devils… Yes that’s right, the Tasmanian Devil population has their own myspace!

Charlotte and Dan had some shots taken at their soon to be old house. Like always, i asked about pets and such things… which is when the conversation turned to “the girls” Gemma and Nikki, who as you may be able to work out are pugs.

It was my first time working with pugs and it was heaps of fun, they occasionally did what we wanted them to do, especially when there was some treats involved.

Oh and we did manage do get some shots of just Charlotte and Dan without the dogs!

I took a few photos in 2007, in fact, I took a few thousand.I always have loved showing off my work and am very proud of the way my images have developed in the last 12 months. So it’s time to show you all my favourite shots in an audio visual presentation. This is only on for one afternoon only, and not an exhibition that is hanging on the walls, so this is your only chance to see it.

Some of the highlights will include documentary work on the East Coast bushfires and backstage at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala, Holga images, urban and natural landscapes plus heaps of kids,families, pregnant bellies, animals and shoes.

In addition there will be a presentation of some of my favourite portraits of the week taken over the last 5 years. The POW started as a way of practicing and pushing myself by taking a different portrait each week. Some of these portraits are commissioned; others are self commissioned and feature comedians, musicians, brides, animals, fictional characters, photographers and everyday people I have bumped into.

The presentations will take about 30 minutes.

Karina was one of the first people to contact me when I did my call out for soon to be mums. You may remember this shot I took at the Show earlier this year.
To give you a little update Jeremy is now an Alderman and Karina is just about to pop, so very exciting and busy times.

I don’t know if Karina really was getting herself into, the bedroom shots were a great start but then it was out to the street with only a sheet. I believe we managed to scare a few neighbours.

And how could we not take some with the new Alderman, Jeremy arrived part way through the session and we all walked up into the start of the Gorge for some appropriate shots in the bush.

And as usual, here are the furry family members as it is at the moment with Molly and Oscar the dogs and Denzel the black cat with attitude.

Kaba likes to have his photo taken, he also likes, food, pats, sleeping on the bed, food, chasing the cats, stretching, food and making his eyes big so he gets food.

I overheard Georgie talking about baby names in the York Town French Bakery and decided to ask if she was up for having some photos taken, and as you can she she was.

We did the shoot at Georgie’s place where her and her dad were in the middle of repainint her room, and of course it happened to be the best spot to do the shots. We were helped along by Cosmo the dog who insisted in getting in some shots.

And how can I not take a shot of Miska the cat, who appeared as I was walking out the door. Stay tuned because in the next 6 weeks i’ll be off to do another shoot with Georgie’s little baby girl.

I seem to be shooting alot more animals these days, I love animals so when ever I see one I will try to take a photo of it. That wasn’t the case with Lily, her owner Jenn moved in with one of my good friends and wanted some shots to take back to Canada when she went to visit family and friends.

Lily did behave herself a little for the shoot, but i couldn’t keep her attention too long, not with all those interesting beach smells to be smelling and rocks to be exlporing.

Lily is a miniature dachshund and is fully grown! The shoot was done down in Taroona on the beach with some great cliffs. It wasn’t the place I was thinking, but still a really great spot.
