Clever girl, holding her own drinks now

I had some jealousy issues with Ivan and Alicias place. Cookbooks and coffee machine. Let leave it and that so we can focus on how amazing they made their wedding day was.

The best weddings are the ones with a real hugh lump of who the couple are. This wedding was totally about Ivan and Alicia. When Ivan first told me that they were looking to get married in June, in the Hartz Mountains and hopefully there will be snow, I was excited. This is a couple who actively wanted some average weather to play a part in their day. And it cetrainly did play a part, but that was ok, the rain was solved with an umbrella and the mud was solved by bumblebee gum boots (as if there was any other option). So Ivan has some scottish blood in him, so instead of the usual “i’m wearing a kilt” it was decided to go in search of some friendly and slightly frisky Highland Cows.

So you can tell they love the outdoors but they also love the indoors, especially their kitchen where they made their wedding cake. It’s not often that you get to the reception and the first thing the couple do is asselble the cake. So many more things I can say but I think the photos can say more.

Congratulations again Ivan and Alicia, may you have a long life and possible have some baby cows named after you!

This is Ken, or Dicko as i’ve known him for about 20 years. We met when I was a cub and he was a scout leader. Now i’m not a cub and he isn’t a scout leader.

He is retired and plays with the trains out in Evandale, just behind the market. He has built himself a little diesel locomotive that you can go have a ride on every second Sunday.

This was a fantastic session down at Clifton. Great weather, people and a super cute puppy who is now a lot bigger since the session was shot back in April.

It’s been a couple of weeks since Nick and Rhea’s wedding and I did try to post some images but had such a hard time figuring out what to post that I decided to post a mega huge post that included a heap of awesomeness that touched every little bit of their big day.

Family is a big part of most weddings, but this was really something. Nick and Rhea initially made contact through Rhea’s mum as they were off doing the teaching English in Japan thing. We had a great chat and a week or two later I skyped with Nick and Rhea and that’s where the fun really began.  I could tell from the way Keryn (Rhea’s Mum talked about her daughter and Nick that there was something special there, but not only between the soon to be weds, but also between the kids and the parents.

Organising a wedding from another continent is a hard thing to do, but there was family here to make things much easier. To give you an idea on some of the cool things that this wedding had I’ll list some as it’s too much to mention everything. Rhea’s dress and shoes were the same dress and shoes her mum wore at her wedding, with the addition of the jacket that her Keryn made. Keryn also made Rhea’s bridesmaid’s dress which happened to be Rhea’s sister Paige. Paige made the earrings and had her grandmothers pearl reset into a new ring for the day too. The flowers were also Keryn’s touch and the seeds from the flowers were given to all the guests at the reception. The other rings were made with the assistance of someone (who I’m still looking for) on Etsy.

So On Nick’s side, his “bridesmaids” was sister Kahlia who also made the cupcakes along with Nick’s mum who also made Kahlia’s dress. Nick’s groomsman was his brother Chris who helped tie Nick’s tie (very important)

The ceremony was at the Baha’i Centre in Hobart, a fascinating building that I look forward to meeting again in the future. Instead of confetti there was Kami-Fufen, a Japanese toy that was propelled at the couple as they left the ceremony.

A few shots at the waterfront followed by some shots up at Islington and then it was time to head to Cascades where Nick used to work as a tour guide and be welcomed by Taiko Drumming.

As mentioned, this is the cut down version… so much more I could rave on about but I really want to get this post up. Nick and Rhea are made for each other, the laugh with the same intensity and have brightness in their eyes that can make anyone happy. I’m glad they found each other and very glad I could get them some photos on their big day.

A little Hobart wedding of Nick and Rhea. So many great stories from this couple who you can tell just love every little bit of each other, which is exactly the fealing I got from all their family and guests as they also love every little bit of them. Renee and Nathan may look familiar to a few people, you may remember there from this wedding photo. That was years ago and now they have added Lachlan to the family. As per the wedding, standard location was thought about and then dismissed for something unique and a bit more meaningful. Enter Salamanca Market, the biggest and busiest market in Tasmania. So along with a cute 11 month old and 2 adoring parent we also had a few hundred Hobartians and tourists to work with. It was a bit of fun, one point I was walking backwards up the hill into a throng of small tourists who really were more interested in looking side to side at wooden fruit than straight ahead at the rapidlt approaching photographer in reverse mode.

Lachlan was awesome, such a great kid. This is really the best part of my job, hanging out with clients on their wedding days and then coming back and meeting the new additions when they turn up.

Susanna and Dave dropped by for the standard planning session and in the usual chat the happens in every planning session it came out that David proposed on a roof top with a surprise picnic. Than it came out that they have had many other roof top picnics and experiences. It got me thinking about where we could do their first family portrait with Mariella. I didn’t have to think too much because outside the office window the view is dominated by the Mecure. A phone call and some meetings later and it was all set, sunset on the rooftop.

Susanna also took the nesting process to a whole new level turning their bed into a real nest with willow branches!

So, what about a different spot to do a portrait… how about Salamanca Market at lunchtime. Kinda hard to shoot, but lots of fun. More soon.

5 Silvers for some prints and another silver for a wedding album. The wedding album went on to take out 2010 Tasmanian Wedding Album of the Year. Second time in a row i’ve picked up that one. Very happy about that. I’ll post the wedding album in it’s entirety soon… maybe even make it a slideshow.

A couple of years ago I took a photo of Sara, Dwayne Ben and when she was expecting a baby and then we did some photos when Cameron had arrived. You can see those shots in the batblog post here. Well, about 2 years have passed and as up can see Cam is heading in the right direction!

It’s always fun to catch up a couple of years down the track and update the family photos. This time there was a bit of rough play, lots of jumping, wrestling, and a few head knocks, but nothing too much to worry about. We also hung out in Ben’s new tree house (or as I refer to it “tree mansion”) and also did a bit of jumping (and funny eyes) on the trampoline.

Cameron is at the perfect age, i love photographing 2 year olds. It’s a very cute time of life, the expressions and little things they get up to are worth capturing.

A confession, I did suffer a minor amount of vegetable garden envy during this shoot, their broccoli is doing much better than ours (I.e. not eaten by a bird or ravaged by caterpillars) But on a positive note it’s radish harvesting time tonight, going to be a good salad!

It’s catch up Batblog post time. Marcus and Natasha got married down at the French Hotel and it was one of the best ceremonies / receptions I’ve seen in ages. The ceremony was all about their story, family and friends. It included all the speeches by family and friends that are normally reserved for the evening and Marcus sang a song and Natasha gave Marcus a Legoman light key ring. The legal part was preformed by Marcus’s mun who is a real life celebrant. And I almost forgot to mention they all walked out to the band playing Rainbow Connection (Go Muppets!).

So if the ceremony wasn’t enough to rave about, then check out the details. TOYS! Having little “lego stations” around the reception so that everyone could make their own creations was a fantastic. But the crowning detail was the cake, a cake made of Lego complete with bride, groom and crane!

We played on a the famous Margate Train for some photos as well as about the amazing grounds and insides of D’Entrecasteaux, always a pleasure to shoot there, so many places for amazing shots.

The night finished with a fair amount of dancing and music. Marcus’s musical orientated friends and family got up and took turn in the band. Marcus also joined in on the bass for a few songs.

Another shoot from late last year. This one was worth waiting for, we all had a vision for the shoot and when ever we booked it the weather didn’t support that vision. But we did get there in the end. The Fishers have a little boat. This little boat won the Launceston to Hobart race at the end of last year!

And I also met this dog as we were finishing the shoot

So this shoot may have almost been too much fun and the cool thing is that there is a wedding in the future with these too which i’m sure will push the fun into overdrive! Nick and Rhea came all the way from their little home in Japan for the shoot (they may have come to see family for Christmas and have an engagement party too, but i’m sure the engagment photography session was the main reason )

The plan, lets meet and Jackman and Ross. It was closed. So we just wandered the steets of Battery Point and took some awesome shots, had lots of laughs and generally had a very fun time.

I’m really enjoyed working with Michael and Camille, they are a nice Melbourne couple who decided that Tasmania would be a really great spot to get married. And a couple of weekend ago they did just that. Almost everyone at the wedding was an import and Tasmania put on a great bit of weather for them all.

The day started off with some guys getting their fill at Zum, where Michael’s son met us then off to Zero Davey to get all dressed and pretty. I took one of my favoutie ring shots ever there and enjoyed watching four grown men attempting to tie the same tie at the same time.

We found Camille all pretty in pink hanging out with some family and friends at the IXL apartments. I’d never been to the apartments, quite a spectacular entrance. The girls all chowed down on various nice things before being ushered out so Camille could get ready with her Mum. I like a different coloured wedding dress, Zakk describes this one as fairy floss pink, which is a little better than my descriptive attempt red pants left in the wash with the whites. It was a great pastel pink colour that really suited Camille.

When everyone was ready it was time to meet up before the wedding. Michael and Camille arranged some time for family photos and come couple shots before the ceremony. Of course, the family shots were slightly interrupted when Michael’s dad got into a spot of bother we a few thousand bikers (he got stuck in the toy run traffic). We found a heap of different spots around the water front and took some of my new favorite wedding shots. I really liked the portrait I took of Michael’s son Zak sitting on the floor in T42. We then met up with everyone to get on board Peppermint Bay II and head down to the ceremony at Peppermint Bay.

I’m lucky that in my job I get to spend heaps of time photographing people like these guys, they are so nice! Congrats again Michael and Camille

I’m not sure if you can tell from these photos who works in the city and who works in the country…

I met Lou a little while ago, in Mr Roberts’ grade 7.2 classroom the log cabin in at high school. That was a while ago, now she is about to tie the knot with Hugh. But before all that it was time for a quick engagement portrait session. Engagement portraits gives couple opportunities to have photos together that probably won’t happen on the wedding day and like all portraits we shoot, we try to put some extra meaning into the sessions. Lou and Hugh just bought this fantastic house, when we did the session there were still a heap of boxes laying around waiting to be opened. You could feel the excitement in these guys (after the camera nerves disappeared!), new house and about to get married.  This is going to be a fun country wedding!

Irene is from that big country called Canada and had a heap of her family down for the big day including a couple of sisters who turned out to be good bridesmaids Ben’s sister rounded out the trio of Bridesmaids adding some height to the party! The girls all got prepped down at the Lauceston Seaport, a great spot with Lush Hair to do the hair and Mud Club to do the make up and Peppers to get ready at. A general wedding tip, keep all the getting ready places close together as it makes the morning flow much easier.

Ben and his mates got up to all kinds of foolhardy activities in the morning including the unfortunate incident with the Sebel’s luggage trolley. These guys and girls were up for fun the whole day, and they didn’t disappoint.

Following the ceremony in the church it was into the stretched Hummer and off up the river to relax, do a bit of bridal party photography, play a little tease the photographer and a have a few drinks. We stopped a few times before getting to the always well set up Cataract Bistro for the reception. Of course, I was still after the killer shot the wrap up the day nicely and investigated around a little. I’m always up for challenging myself to find something different at places I’ve already photographed before and the last shot was a shot that I had not seen before but was glad to see it with Ben and Irene and that fantastic sky.

I love magazines; there are a few piles of them at home. I’m always excited when a new one arrives in the post office box. Today’s delivery was doubly exciting. Capture is a great read for photographers, covers a lot of interesting and important things relating to the industry of shooting everything in Australia. The current issue is their inaugural Annual filled with what Editor Marc Gaffen describes as “a selection of the finest work produced in the last 12 months.”
Heaps of good photos, including the one above taken at Brad and Elisha’s wedding. There were 5 wedding photos chosen for the annual and I got one of them. Quite exciting to get an image in there, I can’t imagine how many were submitted.
I’m off to buy these doggies some treats…

Matt and Megan’s friends and family gave the BATBOOTH quite a workout last weekend. Megan bought along some thing to dress up in too. Appologies to my Dad who does appear below too! More soon from this wedding… Matt is quite tall, maybe slightly exagerated in the photo, but close. This was a stylish wedding, and the photos of the food will make your mouth water, very impressive, espeially since Megan cooked them.

These guys decided to go away to get married, they choose Launceston which is about as far away as possible from their home in Halls Creek. They also bought along their family and friends from many other foreign parts (foreign being not Tasmania).

So many things that were different for these guys, we have grass, wind and we don’t have dust. Plus we also have fantastic places to get married like the superb Red Feather Inn, one of the prettiest venues in the state.

It must have been hard planning such a great wedding from that distance; they even had to stop off in Perth to pick up things to bring down. It was worth it, it all seemed to be fantastic. The kids were running around, beer and wine being drunk, Barb “Super Celebrant” Youd doing the ceremony and the sun out all day. There was even fake moustaches, wants and tiaras after the ceremony for everyone!

We headed off to take photos with “something that doesn’t look like Halls Creek”, the Longford area was nice and green providing a bit of a contrast.

And if you are ever up in Halls Creek, drop into the Kimberley Emporium and say hi to these guys.

I caught up with Susie and Adrian a few weeks ago, had a great time exploring all the photo opportunities in the house. Also Theodore was very good to us, these guys really really love Theo and it was important to get a great shot of him. He certainly had heaps of character!

Andrew is the little brother of one of my good friends. It was great to get asked to shoot his upcoming wedding to Trish, who I seems to have been hanging Andrew for a while. We were all in Hobart for Andrews brothers surprise party, so decided to head out and get some photos before the festivities. Again, there was this blue stuff in the sky, it’s starting to happen more often so I decided to use it, but kept the water in some shots to remind us of all the rain!

We have had to pospose so many portrait session of late due to the weather, can’t have kids getting cold and wet. It was great to get back out and photograph Ava a couple of weeks ago. The plan was to shoot in the park across the road from her place, but just as we get started we noticed the familiar rain starting up again. We retreated into the house, got some more shots, then out into the backyard.Ava and her dad had bought a new cupboard, which was just Ava sized, so we made good use of it. It kept the rain off, well, off Ava!

We did this head shot of Jeremy a couple of weeks ago, and now it has been published in ‘Inside Harcourts’, the magazine for Harcourts International.

Kangaroo Bluff is a great place for firing a canon. It’s not a bad place for an engagement portrait session either. That’s where Craig and Nyree come in. They are tying the knot next year and live not too far from this historic site, so it proved a great backdrop for their engagement session.

These guys were alot of fun to photograph, really playful, and so was Sprocket the award winning high jumping dog. I also met another main player in Craig’s life during the shoot, his car. No photo of the car as yet, saving those for the wedding post next year. It will be worth the wait, it’s a pretty cool car.

Isobel was the year below me at school, and I only really got to now her once school had finished and she started to mix with some of my other friends. Now she is engaged to a nice Scotsman and we are really looking forward to doing their wedding photography in January.

Our shoot location is down a backstreet in New Town. I managed to get a little lost looking for the café we were meeting in and luckily found this great little spot. It goes to show that getting lost does pay off.
We had a bit of a good time taking the photos, jumping on walls, wondering if we were tress passing and generally taking some good photos of good people. This wedding is going to be great, really looking forward to meeting the Scottish contingent because who doesn’t like a Scotsman (apart from the English, yes I saw Braveheart)

After a frantic couple of days in Hobart, Vee and I took the long way home, travelling some back roads to see what we could find.

Our first discovery was actually suggested to us by friends in Hobart, Puddleduck Vineyard. It’s in the Coal Valley just before Richmond and is a very cute little cellar door with equally good four legged friends. We tried all the wines and they are all really nice, it was hard to narrow down what bottle to buy, the Bazil Riesling won out in the end.

The Bazil is named after the famous dog Bazil, who along with Peggy are the Pembroke Corgies that run around and greet all the visitors. Bazil is famous for bing in the Wine Dogs book, and the soon to be released Wine Dogs Australia 2 features both of them.

The place has a relaxing feel to it, owners Jackie and Darren were pouring the wine and there was a really homely feal to how they introduced their wines and the on flowing conversation from there.

So, the wine is great, Jackie and Darren are great and the dogs are great. Three reasons to stop by when you are down that way. I can guarantee we will be dropping back.

We kept driving up strange roads, via Baden where I took these shots of the old hall, or church. Not exactly sure what it was.

I first met Sam and Maya at a market in Launceston and, like everyone who sees their things, was mesmerised by their paper folding abilities. The other thing that gets you is the paper. It’s no ordinary paper. Pages of old books are carefully selelcted for paper thickness and storyline to make their creating even more spectacular.

We shot out to Golden Valley to photograph these guys, they live an a stunning part of the world with a view of a mountain out the back door and the smell of nature all around.

I had a sneek peak at what they have made for Van Wonderland and it looks fantastic, and some of it doesn’t involve paper!

Van Wonderland is an exhibition of work by contemporary crafts practitioners exploring a mysterious world of not-quite-real objects and creatures, based upon historic western perceptions of Tasmania (‘Van Diemen’s Land’) as a distant and little-known island at the far reaches of the globe.

This ‘new world’, full of strange and exotic flora and fauna, could be by turns beautiful and sinister – just as the strange Wonderland explored so famously by Lewis Carroll’s Alice.

Step into Van Wonderland and explore the mysteries within. And don’t forget to take your teacup.

Participating artists include Tara Badcock, The Purple Finch, Erin Tappe, Hideyo, Cat Badcock, Ghostpatrol, Megan Perkins, Omar Misa, Helen Goninon, and Anita Dineen with accompanying photography by Alan Moyle (Photobat).

One of the best things about a wedding expo is meeting some of the other vendors, so when everyone rushes off to the fashion parade, we tend to wander about talk to each other. On wedding days it can be a little stressful to really talk to other people who are working, and the expo is the same sort of thing.

So last week celebrant and all round nice lady Barb Youd and I jumped in the car and headed out to the newly refurbished Quamby Estate. Quamby is an old homestead about 25 minutes west of Launceston on the old Bass Highway. The weather wasn’t very fantastic, but this place looks amazing in all kinds of weather and times of the year. All the trees look brilliant in summer with the breeze blowing through them.

It was quite popular for weddings a few years ago but with change of ownership they stopped for a while. Another change of hands and there is a refreshed new venue for weddings parties or just very nice place to stay.

From a wedding point of view there are so many options for getting ready, the ceremony and also the reception. Fantastic for a couple who want to keep everything in the one place. It’s probably been about 6 years since I shot a wedding there (would show  you the photos but I’d have to get a scan of the negatives!) and it still has the same charm and beautiful view.

This visit was the first time I had been inside the main house, and I was very impressed. If you are looking for a place with luxury and style this is it. I was reminded of the Henry Jones Art Hotel and also Islington.

I think the best spots for ceremonies would be out the front on the lawn with a grand entrance from the house, or even just to the front of the reception room in amongst the huge old trees. Another brilliant thing is that there is a wet weather option too, the gazebo like part of the reception area will be well as a back up.

Congratulations again Penny and Michael, you look fantastic and i’m having such a great time preparing your photos to show you. I hope you both have an absolutly amazing honeymoon!

Sunday was a bit strange… There was this blue stuff in the sky and a big bright thing too. So Vee, Kaba and I, like the rest of Launceston, went out to expore in what seemed like a Spring day.

The most exciting thing was seeing a seal swinning up into the Gorge. The Gorge is still very flooded and we watched it fighting the water for about 20 minutes. Vee worked on getting some shots of it, while i concentraited on the little doggie at my feet. Kaba didn’t like being on the bridge too much but was happy for all the pats and compliments of the passers by.

A couple of weeks ago I headed up out early on a Saturday to shoot this gourgeous little family portrait. Little Liv was only about 12 weeks old and looking very cute, and if she is anything like her big sister Layla, the cuteness will be contunieing while she keeps growing.

Yes, I still have a thing for shoes, wedding season is nearly here so be expecting even more shoes being blogged soon.

She had so much fun just running around and around and around the curtain! So happy about it!

Mum Katy is a Naturapath and own Tonic Inspired Health up in Trevallyn, while Dad Jason runs around selling fantastic Pheonix drinks (the cola is my favourite)

Another preview from last Saturday’s engagment portrait sessions down in Hobart. This one was show with my rarely used lensbaby.

I think this is the most massive-est post I have ever done. Why not! These are the people who turned up for our cupcake / open day and all deserve to be thanked for eating small cakes for the little animals. We managed to raise just under $500, so I kicked in the rest to make it an even $500, which we will be donating to the RSPCA.

I was just searching through the Batblog and realised that these guys post didn’t go up! I’m sure Mum Belinda is out there thinking “my boys aren’t good enough for the Batblog, He must hate us”. And it’s not the case at all, this was a challenging shoot, but, as Ben Lee says “That’s the way i like it”. This wasn’t the first time we had met, these boys have such distinct personalities and it is really fun trying to catpure them all in the one photo.

And, while we are at it, let’s chuck into the session the cousins, Dylan, India and Zain. That was also a heap of fu, 6 kids, all in the one shot all looking good. As usual, rising to the challenge (like Rocky) we knocked it off in no time.

And while we are at it, let’s throw in another cousin! Lily won the prize for best 6 month old on the day! Go Lily!

It’s not a bad idea, getting all the family together and getting them all shot at the one time. Infact, we have somthing like that being launched on Monday, our Openday/Cupcake day. 11am – 7pm at Photobat World HQ, Level 3 Holyman House, 52 Brisbane Street. Come along and join the fun!

The AIPP put on a nice little event for Photograpers in Launceston this week. Four photography nice persons were flown all the way from Melbourne to tell us about wedding, portraits and commercial photography. As usual, I took them all outside and shot them.

Friday night saw the BATBOOTH heading back to the spectacular Albert Hall. This time we were shooting people to raise some cash for prostate cancer research at Simon’s Cancer Ball. The organiser, Stuart, lost his Dad last year to prostate cancer and out of that sadness came this fantastic night of raising awareness and funds to help fight this cancer.

Some facts I learnt from Dr Harry, who was one of the speakers.

1: Each year more Australian men die of prostate cancer than Australian women die of breast cancer

2: Initial tests for the cancer is a simple blood test

and

3: Hearing about the further tests for prostate cancer while eating does put you off your food but inturn makes you want to run to your doctor.

So guys, if you are over 50 and haven’t started to have an annual test you better start as 1 in 11 men are going to get this. The odds aren’t great.

This was one of the best charity balls I have been to, organised by very enthusiastic and dedicated team who put in many hours of work to get this together. I have no idea what the amount raised on the night was, but we will be adding to it with $10 from each print sale heading off to add to the total.

Hey wow… this is my 700th Batblog post!

Just another random outing to the carpark while wandering in Hobart last Saturday

When I ran my little competition a few weeks ago, Katie was one of the unlucky winners, coming in second. 2nd place isn’t first looser around here so we all drove off to do one of my favourite pregnancy sessions yet (I think i say that every time, but they are all really fun!). These guys are beach people and there was no option about where we would shoot this one. Andy and Katie came and picked me up and we headed off to explore beaches until we found a perfect one for the portrait. After a couple of not quite right beaches, we found a perfect stretch of uninhabited coastline where we could play.

Katie and Andy were so playful with each other, it was really cute to see them bounce off each other, and you can tell they are going to be fun parents. And little unborn Fin has no option, he is going to surf and even if he doesn’t he will be spending a lot of time at the beach!

The light was fading, so all the fun was over… well… it was supposed to be. Sometimes I see a shot that is a little brave. it is winter here so the idea of getting a little wet isn’t that appealing. I asked them “Do you reckon you could sit in the water? Just for a second? Promise it will be worth it!” So the answer was “Yeah… I guess so… Sure!” So i got the guys into position and I got myself into position (Laying down in the wet sand and water, and it was cold) and for 30 seconds we took the final shot and it really was worth it.
Thanks again yaou guys for being awesome, I really can’t wait to meet little Fin in a few weeks.

Don’t you just love big puddles of muddy water? Especially when you are kneeling in them to get a shot!

It was so hard to try and figure out what images from this multiple family portrait shoot to put up on the blog. So I decided to put them all up in a video.

These kids are all cousins and the photos were shot up on Greens Beach, right at the tip of the Tamar River north of Launceston. Hope you enjoy the video!

Getting to know people is one of the best things about this job, so driving up to the beach with Katie and Andy was a joy.
This shoot is right up there with the best pregnancy portrait sessions we have done. I can’t wait to post the rest!

Despite both being ravaged with Lurgi, Zakk and I made our way to the Baby Boomers Ball. Not being Babyboomers (i’m a gen X, Zakk gen Y) we were there to throw the BATBOOTH to the nice folk, take some photos and then sell some to raise some money for the Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust.

I have said it before, and i’ll say it again. Winter is a fantastic time for having some photos taken. It was Sam and Pip’s turn to do their engagement portrait session. We started out at their place as there was someone special to photography. Elsie is Pip’s old cat who has a lot of attitude in looks, but is really just a sweet little cat.

You can see she loves her scratches. Once we has said goodbye to Elsie we headed down to Duck Reach, an old power station hided in the suburbs of Launceston. Usually when I photograph here it’s straight to the rocks, but as the light was amazing we stayed on the bridge and around the station itself.

Sam and Pip were so easy to photography, there was so much laughter and you can really tell how much on love they are. I am really looking forward to their wedding in Avoca later in the year.

I first entered the Australian Professional Photography Awards in 2001, and got nothing. I had no idea what I was doing back then, I had talked to a photographer and sent in what I had. So nothing came of it, the next year I was a bit more on the ball and picked up a couple of awards, and have been getting some ever since.

This year I received the honour of Master of Photography with 1 Gold Bar from The Australian Institute of Professional Photography. I was presented during the awards ceremony in Sydney with a gold bar to be added onto my Masters ribbon.

How this all works is that for every silver award you get one point and ever gold award you get two points. If you receive 5 points with in 4 years you become an Associate, I received this in 2003. The next step is that if you receive 10 additional points within five years you become a Master of Photography, I received this in 2006. From then every additional 10 points gained within 5 years gets you an Gold Bar.

As we were heading out the door of Jason and Catta’s wedding, catta mentioned how much she liked the shots I had been taking with the Holga (my plastic toy camera that shoots film and you never know what you are going to get out of it). Of course, Holga wasn’t to far away so we whipped her out and ran off a few shots. Hope you like!

Wow. How is this for a around, engaged in Paris earlier at the end of last year, married less than three months later on the east coast of Tasmania. BAM! And it couldn’t be more perfect. Glen was best man in Georgie and Garth’s wedding a couple of years back and it was fantastic to catch up with a few familiar faces at this big day.

I say big day, but really it was a peaceful small ceremony at Avalon overlooking the sea with big clouds. Only close friends and family were in attendance, making it feel even more special for us to be there to document it.

After the ceremony, it was to the beach with a couple of special friends each. Nature was good to us, no rain but perfect clouds and light. Such an amazing place to be sharing with a very happy couple.

 This is the first wedding that I can actually remember the groom in nappies (not the bucks night, like 24 years ago!) Andrew spent the first few years of his life living down the street, our Dad’s even worked together for a while. Now he is all grown up and met Clare at Relay for Life a few years ago and now they are all married.

I’m not sure if you saw the weather on Saturday in Launceston. It was a little wet, little being an understatement. It poured. Which meant that I got all excited with all the possibilities that rain brings with it.

 Andrew and the boys started off by showing us how to not play golf, while the girls got all nice looking in town. Andrew likes cars, and hearing his commentary about his dad’s car mauvering abilities were great. I’m not sure why it took so long to get it out of the garage, but it did!

St Johns Church in Launceston was saw the coming together of the two families, it was so impressive that both Andrew and Clare’s parents and grand parents had all been married in the same church. It is fantastic to see such an great  family tradition.

After the ceremony we ventured off into another different location. Somehow along the way it was decided to go to Andrew’s work to take some photos. As this was a timber yard I was up for it. Very different, very fun and look at the pubbles! It was worth getting drenched for these shots.

It all wound up in at the Grand Chancellor, which put on a great spread. We enjoyed surprising most of the guests (and the bride) with a same day slideshow of their photos.

I was thrilled when Megan gave me a call a few months ago to say she was getting married. Megan is Rob’s sister, and I shot Rob and Veronica’s wedding a couple of years ago. So Megan is getting married to Charlie next month, we took these shots just before Christmas last year and I have only now managed to get them posted. I really enjoyed this shoot too, it was fun getting a tour of Charlie’s families farm, the wedding will be on Megan’s family farm, so a very farm orientated couple.

We had been looking forward to Jess and Rhys’s wedding ever since they first came up to see us, we looked forward to it even more after the engagement session, and then the day came and didn’t let us down.

Rhys and Jess only move into their newly built home earlier in the week and now it was inundated with family. We caught up with Rhys there and found some brilliant locations for shots, it was like the house had been designed for taking photos in.

Jess was in the more established family home down past Margate, which was built by her Dad. We arrived in the finishing stages of make up. The dress was spectacular; it came all the way from Spain. The flowers were unexpected, they were given to Jess the day before as a present (did I mention that Jess got married on her birthday!) and she tore them apart and reassembled them into 3 bouquets for her and her bridesmaids.

Then we met the car, Jess’s dad’s first love. A fantstic Holden, very photogenic!

I have said it before, and I will keep saying it. D’entrecasteaux is the best spot in Tasmania to be getting married. You don’t even feal like you are in Tasmania, you could easily be in a small town in Europe. It proved a great spot for the ceremony, which was sunny, windy, overcast, rainy, sunny, rainy, overcast, sunny repeat. Jess’s Uncle Ron preformed the service, with Rhys’s family providing the paparazzi!

We played down on Cremorne Beach for some photos before heading back to D’entrecasteaux for some time with the guests before they were shipped out leaving only us and the happy couple full rein of the place to get some shots. And yes, we got some fantastic ones.

Thanks again Rhys and Jess for letting us come and spend the day with you! There are many more photos to share with you. I can’t wait to catch you when you get back from sunning yourselves on a tropical island.

A beautiful couple, it will be hard narrowing down a few shots to post later in the week, these guys were too much fun. We literally had to take tha cards out of the cameras to stop taking more photos, we could have gone all day! More up later in the week.

I knew this was going to be a good wedding as soon as Matt called up to make an appointment, Matt and Molly were in the office a couple of hours after the call and booked on the spot. There was just something about these two, you could tell straight away their wedding was going to be a fun once.

Flash forwards 6 months, Matt now works at Photobat and we have watched their wedding come to life! Hearing about all the details, including the guys custom made converse shoes, the flowers, the music and the search for little treats to give to the guests.

They guys all gathered at Matt’s place, where they seem to have all spent a lot of time there. So much so that Matt’s mum treats them all as her own! The boys got suited and they looked fierce.

The girls on the other hand were the typical mayhem of hair, make up, dress mending, more hair, dressing, and a little bit of a drink to help it all flow. The girls all looked fantastic, make up and hair were perfect. Molly looked phenomenal too, the dress was stunning.

The whole event happened at Brickendon in Longford, a country estate about 20 minutes away from Launceston. The ceremony was held next to the homestead, with the reception over in the barn.

We loved photographing all these guys and girls, so much laughter! We had o move it along a bit as the threat of rain was starting to scare us. It held off and left the most amazing light falling everywhere.

Matt and Molly, Thanks again letting us come along and play with you and your friends, there are so many photos that we can not wait to show you. Enjoy the tropics, I hear Molly’s tan is coming along well, where Matt’s is lagging far behind!

Wayne and Heidi had a fantastic little wedding out in the country. At Strathmore to be precise, I had not shot a wedding out there for a couple of years and was very glad to see it is all looking very nice and provided a lot of opportunities.

The wedding was quite informal, Bar Youd did her usually fantastic job, Wayne said his things, Heidi said here things, there were tears and in the end they were married! We could tell from the first time we met up with Wayne and Heidi that this wedding was going to be fun. Not too serious and a lot of laughing. I like happy people, and if you mix their natural happy with the happy of their wedding you get quite a lot of happy.

 Heidi is pretty talented too, she designed her dress (her mother made it) and made the cake. Wayne assures me he assisted well in the cake making, mostly with the grating!

 Thanks again you guys for the really fun day, there are so many more shots that you are going to love, well I know we love them here, so I’m sure you will love them too! Don’t shoot too much film in NZ!

A quick post from the weekend, the wedding out at Strathmore was another great one, Wayne and Heidi had perfect weather for the location and look at what happened towards the end of the day. More to come later in the week.

And the AIPP exhibition is up at K&H café on George St in Launceston. It features many of the AIPP members from all over the state, displaying images that have won some awards in the last year. It is open until the 4^th of April, with the official opening happening on the 4^th of March, next Wednesday night at 6pm. If you want to come, please send me an email and let me know so we can make sure you get a drink.

The plan for the last few days was to get away. A weekend with out a wedding in the warmer months is a time to run away with the Wife for some quality time (as well as some business planning and photography!). Vikashni had not been to the west coast before so we changed all that with a whirlwind visit to all the major centers, Zeehan, Queenstown, Strahan, Tulla, Rosebury amongst others (Including Gormoston, which really doesn’t have a centre)

One of the best things of the whole trip was meeting Rod (last photo). Rod has a connection to my family past, much more of that in a later blog post.

Of course, Dr Frankenstein’s House of Monsters, also in Zeehan came close.

It isn’t every wedding that you get to go where you want to, shot how you want to, shoot people about some of the best things Launceston has to offer and share a fantastic day with a couple from the other side of the world who just happen to be getting married on that day too.

David and Amy choose Launceston to elope to and Tasmania to honeymoon in. With Barb Youd as the celebrant and Photobat as the photographers, we guarentted them a totally great wedding experiance plus we gave heaps of info on the best spots to go in Tasmania. Barb even leant them some gators! She really is a super celebrant!

There were so many fantastic moments in the day, lunch at Josef Chromy, the ceremony at Strathlynn where the clouds put on a fantatic show, getting kicked out of the MTT Bus Terminal and then exploring Coats Patons.

These guys were personality plus, amazing people and we are so thankful to have spent the time getting to Amy and David and getting them some of our best photos to show off to their family and friends back in the US!

The weekend is over! I know it was over a few days ago but it has been a very busy few days starting in North West Tasmania, on to Brisbane and then to home.  I’m fealing exhausted but thought I should write a little post to update you on what is been going on.

Saturday was a long day for a great wedding. Hayley and Aaron tied the knot at Highfield House in Stanley, here is a preview, and a full post will be up in a couple of days.

 I managed to get back in the door after the wedding at 11.30pm and then packed for Queensland. It seems that I only had a couple of hours sleep before the 5am alarm went off so I could get to the airport for the 7am to Melbourne then up to Brisbane.

I had been invited up to speak at the Australian Institute of Professional Photography’s Hair of the Dog conference. It was my first time to this conference and I was impressed, a heap of speakers, lots of sessions, a big trade show and most importantly quite a lot of participants.

My talk was delivered in the late afternoon to about 100 or so people and I am told went quite well. There were a heap of people who hung around to have a chat afterward. There was a cocktail party afterwards where I hit the water and orange juice hard, where large amounts of others hit the jager-bombs hard and woke the next morning with drinking related issues. I was stuffed so headed home early and turned on the TV to be horrified by the fires.

I had been away from news all day and could not take my eyes off the TV. It is horrific. The next afternoon I realised that my old head lecturer Gale Spring lives in one of the areas where people have died. It took a couple of days but I did track him down and heard the story of the fire coming towards them and then turning away when the wind changed. They were lucky.

Back to the presentations and we heard and saw photos from about another photographer in north Queensland who has had 7 foot of water through his shop and studio. His computers and equipment were stashed in the ceiling to keep them dry.

It really is a sad time in this country.

Last night I had dinner with some of the remaining photographers before heading off to see Jason Starr, a photographer who was a great help to me when I was starting out and always a delight to meet up with to talk shop and life. This morning I was with new friends Todd and Aleda, we met after my talk and Todd asked me if I have photos taken of myself often. I try every year or so to have photos taken of Vikashni and I, it is good to be on the other side to remember what it is like. He and Aleda hadn’t had photos since they were married 8 years ago, so this morning changed that. See below for a little preview…

 After the shoot I had a mini studio tour through some inner city photography businesses, sharing ideas and stories. Photographers are a great group, most are willing to share for the greater knowledge of everyone. I know I have picked up things that will be used at Photobat and I know there are ideas I have given that are already being picked up by photographers here.

I’ll post some more shots later, for now it is time to catch a plane and get some sleep.

Now, its a few days later and here are a heap of photos from the last few days including a lot of portraits of photographers.

 And on a hopeful and really cool note, I dropped off some clothing to the local drop off point which is some local parliamentary offices. I was early so I just though that what was left out the front was because they were not open. I was wrong; they were out the front because inside was packed. There was no room to move. It is a mammoth effort that made me feal really proud to be from Launceston. So much giving and I heard that people turned up with cash to donate but they couldn’t accept it, so the people went to the shops, bought clothes and donated them. Go Launceston!

As i’m up in Brisbane, supposedly finishing my talk that i’m giving in a couple of hours I thought i’d procrastinate a little and post this very fun shoot.  We are so lucky  to be shooting Rhys and Jessica’s wedding in a couple of months, but before all that happens we did the engagement shoot. And as you can see, we had a blast!A bike the Rhys made, playing on the jetty, splashing in the water, cutting our feet on the oysters and patching ourselves up with pirate band aids. How much more fun can you have?

That’s my foot… it has all healed up nicely now, thanks for asking!

Over the Australia day weekend I shot Peter and Jacqueline’s wedding in the spectacular Bay of Fires Area. You never know what you are going to be dealt with on the East Coast, but you can guarantee that no matter the weather it is always a beautiful spot and that Angasi will deliver a fantastic reception.

The dress was “Beach Formal” so Peter’s mum made a suit for his little bear that he was given on the first day of his life. The bear was a witness to the whole day and even sat on the rock where all the paperwork was signed.

Locations are always a hard choice for weddings, but I don’t think that there was any doubt that the grass area out the front of Jacqueline’s parents shack / holiday house would be perfect. Great views and a warm sun made the ceremony great and a bit of fun too. So many smiles between these guys during the ceremony, I think everyone could really feal the love of these two.

Pete and Jac wanted to feature the landscape in their photos. Not a hard thing to do with these kinds of locations less than a minute walk from the house. A nice and playful couple too, we managed to get some really beautiful shots.

I can’t thank Peter and Jacqueline enough for letting us come and photography their day, the family, friends and location were a photographers dream!

I thought that one post for the weekend would be fun, i’ll see if I can keep doing these most weekends, it may just be a lot of photos of my wife and the cats. We shall see.

So, 2 portraits this weekend. Doing a little bit of exploring with Jason and Catherine and we discovered this apple tree about 50 meters from the office. It is growing in concrete and lives happily there in between a few building.  Jason and Catherine are getting married in a few months, so we had fun not melting on their engagement shoot.

Sunday was another drive day, the Allen family photoshoot all the way down at The Gardens on  the East Coast.

 The reason for the shoot was Verne’s Birthday, so all the family came together for a party and photo shoot. There will be more photos soon, I just had to post this one of Verne and Nellie, it is such a sweet photo.

 On the way back we had to stop in at the Village Store and More in St Helens for a late breakfast. Vikashni and I ordered different dished from last week and were very happy with the results again. I can not recommend this place more, I just wish it was a little closer.

Last week I mentioned the singing chef, well this time I took his photo. Nick and Marika own and run the place. I purposely didn’t take a photo of Marika so that we have to go back again.

On the way home we were accosted by some duck/geese/winged birds in Avoca. These guys were not afraid about being polite and asking for food, it was more of a demand.

A few photos taken on the drive back from the East Coast on Australia Day, we were up there to shoot a wedding on the Sunday and stayed over to have a good breakfast and take some photos for fun on the way home.

We all had a really nice breakfast at the Village Store and More in St Helens, which has fantastic coffee, great breakfast menu, an Aussie rock singing chef and apologetic waitresses who only apologise about the chef’s singing. I wasn’t worried about the singing, I recognised it as Ruck Rover and surprised the chef by knowing who they were. The place is vintage, you spend most of your time reading the old magazines and newspapers that cover the tables.

On the drive back we stopped in Derby, which is V and my regular stopping spot on the drive back. Zakk and I explored the old grandstand (more photos to come) and then we all discovered that the Devonshire Tea’s at Berrie’s cafe are quite good, plus they gave Kaba a drink.

 Lucus was the other winner of the 7LA cutest kid competition from way back, we eventually got the shoot in early this month.

  He has such a great smile, but didn’t want to show it to me, so we had to tickle it out of him!

Last Friday was a heap of fun. Ebonee and Paul’s wedding was fantastic and there were so many little things that made the day so much fun. Initially Zakk and I did some private investigating work, searching Salamanca for Paul and his parents… after doing a sweep of all the cafes there was only one more place to look. The Pub, and that is where we found them! From there we went off to a tiny little room at the Battery Point Guest House to take some shots of Paul getting his gear on. This tiny room had a wardrobe, in the wardrobe was the bathroom, which was kind of cool and also quite wierd, but Paul looked good!

Ebonee was in a little bit more spacious room at the top of three flights of stairs in one of the best places I had shot a wedding in Tasmania. If you haven’t heard of D’entrecasteaux, you will be soon. It is set to be the best wedding location in Tasmania and John and Sheryl the owners are also fantastic. So it has everything as you will see below.

As you can see Ebonee looked amazing, and the rooms in this location let us come up with some really different images.

And of course a little bit on Bon Jovi lead to some girls getting up to no good…

 As the weather was all over the place, an inside ceremony was called for, and i know i’ve said it many times before, Kay Haward did another great job at marring these two.

How much do I love this spot? I’m sure there are over 1000 different spots for photos. And I could have used them all if there was time, Eb and Paul are so cute and photogenic.
