There was one thing that Renee said to me when she was talking about photographing her wedding that set in my mind how this wedding was going to play out.

“We are getting married at St Davids and having the Imperial March from Star Wars as the Recessional Music”

My initial thoughts were that this is going to be fun with a touch of geek/nerd. You can go over the top when you are planning those little details in your wedding, too much and it’s overkill, too little and no one notices. Renee and Dave had it just at the right balance with the guests first inkling being the laughs and smiles as they realised that music coming from that sacred organ in that big old church was pure late 70’s Sci Fi.

There were the other touches too, the tardis on the garter, the tardis on the gifts table and the tardis with Tom Baker-esk scarf and caketoppers. Add in the button hole and cufflinks being role playing dice and you knew exactly who these guys were.

And who says geeks can’t look good? These guys looked fantastic and every other bit of the wedding was spectacular. The huge 4 million course guys breakfast, the red kombi for the girls, that great dress, those friendly butterflies, the brief zombie walk and a little boat trip out to the reception at MONA.

I think the best part was exactly what I knew it would be. The fun. Oh so much fun.

Dave and Renee are awesome, geeky and awesome. Congratulations on getting hitched and for doing it your way.

Well, the rains did not come and the flood waters did not rise and Chris and Anita managed to not need any boats or helicopters to get into Longford for their wedding. There was a bit of an unexpected Transformers theme from the wedding with the cuff links and unexpected garter florish.  You might notice are that the bridesmaids were a touch on the crazy side just the way we like them. Thanks again Chris and Anita for a great day and fun night. Have fun up in Sydney.

Special hello to the Rae and Partner Girls, sorry about the delay in getting this up for you

I often get asked if I travel for weddings, generally the people asking are from Hobart or the north west. My typical answer is “The furthest we have travelled for a wedding is Scotland”.
Janie and Derrek are from Launceston, well Derrek came via Canada but he’s a local now and it was 5 years ago last week that we, along with a few hundred tourists stormed Edinburgh Castle for the wedding.

Back in the day, I photoshopped out all the people in the background of this image. Now I like them as they add to the whole feal of the day. There were people everywhere and we had a specially assigned castle guy to look after us and make sure we didn’t do anything bad. Examples of bad things that we did manage to do include block entry way, stay on the same spot for 5 minutes and my favourite was take photos on the stairs. I didn’t really want anyone else on the stairs so I suggested that the bridesmaids drop their flowers at the top of the stairs and make a fuss picking them up. That blocked the stairs for just a couple of minutes needed to get a couple of shots.

The latest issue of Capture Magazine is their annual Wedding Special. I was special enough to get interviewed for it and get a couple of photos featured. The article I’m in is about pricing weddings, so  more of interest for the photographers out there than the nice everyday non camera wielding folk. I hope that people out there get something good and insightful out of what I had to share, pricing is a tricky business. As always, it is a great issue and has some great info and some even better photographers including some of the new crop of great photographers.

It’s always great to get a wedding album back from our awesome album makers and I realised it’s been a while since i’ve posted photos of an actual album.

Lauren and Dain’s album is a vertical 10×14 inch album with a black leather colour. I had a hard time letting this one go out of the studio but it had to go to it’s new home. Many hours go into putting together the design, my style of albums are quite clean and simple but that probably takes the most time to design. So after many hours of designing, working the image and finalising the layout it’s always a little hard to let go. I’m sure I’ll meet this album again one day in the future or maybe I’ll go and get myself a copy.

So why get a wedding album? Lets just say that in 100 years your family will still be able to view the album as it’s all archival. You may be able to view your digital files as long as you can still access them, think back to the days of floppy disk, most people can’t get access to the data on them anymore. As time moves on so does technology, who knows in 100 years if jpeg will be viewable? It’s also the best way to display your wedding story, cleanly and easily showing all the highlights of the day and also how good you look.

I personally am kind of sad that my parents don’t really have a wedding album that shows their day, sure there are a couple of photos about of my dad is his brown pinstripe suit in all it’s 70′s goodness. Plus all my grandparents looking all dressed up well. But I would have loved to see all the other bits of the day, the little handmade details at the reception, the cars and most importantly the emotions of the day. I’m sure Saffron, my baby girl,  would also have loved to see all this. I’m glad that the clients that have albums will be able to share them with their kids and grandkids letting them in on all the stories that the images prompt.

After an epic 3 days last week the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) held the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) in Sydney. I was both an entrant and a judge. Entering takes ages, thinking about what to enter, re thinking about it, then over thinking it and trying to clear my thought to focus on what will be an award image. Even though i’m a judge it is still very hard to get up 4 great images to enter. Knowing all the effort that goes into entering, it can be hard to give a not so nice score to a print when it comes up to be judged. I know what it is like to just miss the mark, it happened to my twice with 2 of my prints comming within 1 and 2 points of getting an award. It proves to the people out there that judges are human and know what it is like to just miss out. I can see what the issues are with those images now, over thinking about it blinded me when I was finalising them. So next year, less thinking, more gutt instinct!

Congratulations to every one that picked up some awards. It was a pleasure to be able to talk up some prints into the gold catergory, a place reserved for really stand out work. When a link to all the award images is avaliable i’ll post it up.

In saying that, i did pick up a Silver in the wedding catergory (above), Silver in the portrait catergory (this image contains artistic nudity, if you are old enough please click here to view, you will need to enter the password “ok” to view) as well as a silver and silver distinction in the wedding album catergory. I really like getting awards for wedding albums, it isn’t just one stand out image from one wedding being judged. It’s the whole story being judged, in my case over 100 images in each of the albums. So i’m pretty happy about that.

So now I have to start thinking about next year now, but not too hard.

I had some jealousy issues with Ivan and Alicias place. Cookbooks and coffee machine. Let leave it and that so we can focus on how amazing they made their wedding day was.

The best weddings are the ones with a real hugh lump of who the couple are. This wedding was totally about Ivan and Alicia. When Ivan first told me that they were looking to get married in June, in the Hartz Mountains and hopefully there will be snow, I was excited. This is a couple who actively wanted some average weather to play a part in their day. And it cetrainly did play a part, but that was ok, the rain was solved with an umbrella and the mud was solved by bumblebee gum boots (as if there was any other option). So Ivan has some scottish blood in him, so instead of the usual “i’m wearing a kilt” it was decided to go in search of some friendly and slightly frisky Highland Cows.

So you can tell they love the outdoors but they also love the indoors, especially their kitchen where they made their wedding cake. It’s not often that you get to the reception and the first thing the couple do is asselble the cake. So many more things I can say but I think the photos can say more.

Congratulations again Ivan and Alicia, may you have a long life and possible have some baby cows named after you!

Bart and Kelly are fun. I mean like really fun. They are from a large country on the other side of the planet called the United States of America, they met and fell in love over there and then moved to a little Australian town called Sydney. They decided on a nice simple wedding in one of their favourite places, which is so small that i’d never heard of it. I’m glad I now where Loongana is now, it’s spectacular and I want to go back. This was Bart and Kelly’s third trip to Tasmania and the third time they have headed to Mountain Valley Wilderness Holidays.

Anyway back to the happy couple, they were joined by parents, the owners of Mountain Valley Wilderness Holidays, Celebrant Terese Tanner and a few native hens. Such a small group for such a big occasion. To be honest, more people would have been too many. It was perfect (apart from the freezing cold). A unique part of the day was everyone having a vote as to which dress Kelly was going to wear. I’m impressed by Kelly’s hiking in heals and braving the cold to get some of these shots and also Bart’s unexpected scarf. 

Congratulations again Bart and Kelly on finding each other and also thanks for letting me tag along on  your special day and also for introducing me to one of the best locations i’ve ever been to.

A quick preview from Wednesday’s wedding. I can’t wait to show you these shots, this shot is on the way to a fantastic location… as if this location isn’t fantastic enough.

The usual way with weddings is that the couple book their wedding photographer and about a year or more later they all get together at the wedding. Not the case with Tim and Jayne, their story is more like get engaged, arrange engagement party, book photographer to shoot their wedding at the engagement party then a month and a half later have the engagement party that turns into the wedding. It was a surprise for the guests, but it seems that half the guests did expect that somthing was up. Somthing had acually been up most of the day as we got together with the birdal party earlier in the day to take some photos of the boys getting ready at home, the girls getting ready at Hotel Charles, and then everyone at Josef Chromy Vineyard and our Relbia way, well out of the way of prying eyes!

There was a slight incident where Tim and Jayne’s dog Eso decided the ring box would be a good chew toy , while the rings were still inside! Tim saved them and Eso redeemed himself to be the ring bearer during the ceremony. Gotta love dogs.

When finding out some things about Dain and Lauren I discovered that Lauren loved romane movies and Dain didn’t much like romance movies. Off course Dain is an action man, likes to fly planes and stuff that is quite blokey. I don’t think he understands he is living in a romance movie. They met at Woolworths when they were 16, he was a produce boy, she was a deli girl. Since then they had to make choices, Dain got accepted into ADFA and had to move away, but then at the last minute decided not to go to stay with Lauren. Lauren knowing what Dain’s dream was and made him go. Dain then found a course in fashion design that was Lauren’s dream and set it up so she could move up and they could be together. That all was good until Dain got sick and had to leave the ADFA, Lauren looked after him. Then Lauren got sick and Dain looked after her. Now 7 years later, they have their little castle in Kingston, have a dog (let’s pretend he’s a friendly magic dragon), married in the Hobart Town Hall that looks like it’s fairytale ballroom, reception was held at Meadowbank in what could be described as grand feast hall, and are off honeymooning in Italy. I reckon that is a bit of a romance movie and Dain is lucky to be in it as one of the two awesome central characters.

This romance movie wouldn’t be complete with the supporting cast including 2 fantastic familes and heaps of friends from both sides. Lauren is the third sister of the Grech family I’ve photographed on their wedding day. It was great to catch up with all the family and meet Dain’s. It was a really special day.

This is Emma’s grandmother on her wedding day back in 1951. This photo was taken at Emma’s wedding with her grandmother holding it. It’s a spectacular photo, hand coloured is really fantastic. It’s what you would expect by having Athol Schmith take the photo.

I love our new Designer albums. Available in a 7×10 inch and a 10×14 inch size for both weddings and portraits. Edge to edge printing on all sides and a heap of new cover colours and materials including a really great assortment of designer woods. This offers a more contemporary feal to our albums, we still have the older matted albums which are also pretty ace, these ones are new and exciting. There are so many more possibilities with these ones and i’m really having a great time designing them. I’ll be showing all our wedding clients these albums when they are finalising the plans for their weddings and you can easily switch over your album style if you like. Portrait clients, these are the ultimate and we have already sold a few from resent sessions and I can’t wait to design some more.

It’s been a couple of weeks since Nick and Rhea’s wedding and I did try to post some images but had such a hard time figuring out what to post that I decided to post a mega huge post that included a heap of awesomeness that touched every little bit of their big day.

Family is a big part of most weddings, but this was really something. Nick and Rhea initially made contact through Rhea’s mum as they were off doing the teaching English in Japan thing. We had a great chat and a week or two later I skyped with Nick and Rhea and that’s where the fun really began.  I could tell from the way Keryn (Rhea’s Mum talked about her daughter and Nick that there was something special there, but not only between the soon to be weds, but also between the kids and the parents.

Organising a wedding from another continent is a hard thing to do, but there was family here to make things much easier. To give you an idea on some of the cool things that this wedding had I’ll list some as it’s too much to mention everything. Rhea’s dress and shoes were the same dress and shoes her mum wore at her wedding, with the addition of the jacket that her Keryn made. Keryn also made Rhea’s bridesmaid’s dress which happened to be Rhea’s sister Paige. Paige made the earrings and had her grandmothers pearl reset into a new ring for the day too. The flowers were also Keryn’s touch and the seeds from the flowers were given to all the guests at the reception. The other rings were made with the assistance of someone (who I’m still looking for) on Etsy.

So On Nick’s side, his “bridesmaids” was sister Kahlia who also made the cupcakes along with Nick’s mum who also made Kahlia’s dress. Nick’s groomsman was his brother Chris who helped tie Nick’s tie (very important)

The ceremony was at the Baha’i Centre in Hobart, a fascinating building that I look forward to meeting again in the future. Instead of confetti there was Kami-Fufen, a Japanese toy that was propelled at the couple as they left the ceremony.

A few shots at the waterfront followed by some shots up at Islington and then it was time to head to Cascades where Nick used to work as a tour guide and be welcomed by Taiko Drumming.

As mentioned, this is the cut down version… so much more I could rave on about but I really want to get this post up. Nick and Rhea are made for each other, the laugh with the same intensity and have brightness in their eyes that can make anyone happy. I’m glad they found each other and very glad I could get them some photos on their big day.

These guys are truly awesome, so awesome that I’m working on a massive post of their wedding.

Earlier this year I picked up the 2010 Tasmanian Wedding Album of the year at the AIPP Tasmanian Photography Awards. Albums are a bit of a puzzle, you start out with all the images fromt he day and have to condense it into a set of images that flow and tell the story of the day. I took a different approach with designing this album opting for core images over too many images. Let me know what you think, I like and am moving towards this style in my designs since.

A little Hobart wedding of Nick and Rhea. So many great stories from this couple who you can tell just love every little bit of each other, which is exactly the fealing I got from all their family and guests as they also love every little bit of them. I just got back from Hobart and Jarod and Liz’s Elopement at the spectacular Islington Hotel. A great spot for a wedding and a dream for a wedding photographer. Congratulations again Jarod and Liz!

I love shooting details at a wedding, it’s pretty much the start of the shoot… get some details. They get the brain going. Here are a couple of rings from the last couple of weddings.

Andrew and Claire’s sitting on one of Andrew’s 30 guitars… I believe this one is in his top 5 favourites.

Andrew and Claire’s wedding happened to be in just the right spot! I found this location a few years ago, been itching to use it with for somthing.

5 Silvers for some prints and another silver for a wedding album. The wedding album went on to take out 2010 Tasmanian Wedding Album of the Year. Second time in a row i’ve picked up that one. Very happy about that. I’ll post the wedding album in it’s entirety soon… maybe even make it a slideshow.

Going from Tasmania to Queensland wasn’t as cool as many of the guests who come from other parts of the world including Chris’s homeland in Zimbabwe

From Saturdays wedding of Nichola and Andrew. Bay of Fires and Binalong Bay are fantastic spots for wedding photography, especially with such a great couple who are up for anything!

Normally I get to hang out with the couples a bit before the big wedding day. Craig and Em were a little bit different, we had planned to meet up last last year but Em’s friends surprised her and whisked her away. I had met Em once when she was a bridesmaid in Spider and Muff’s wedding (i just like saying their names), and I first met Craig when I walked up the steps of his parents place on his wedding day. From the first moment, I knew this was going to be a fun ride of a day. Kids everywhere, and I mean everywhere. I think I saw some on the roof, but that may have been  bird. So real bridal party as such, just  a heap of nieces and nephews to guide the bride down the aisle.

For those who don’t know where Cygnet is, I suggest you get a map and visit. Great place, great vibe and nice people. I know this because it seemed like they were all at the wedding. The ceremony and recpetion took place in a paddock next to Em’s parents house with fantastic views off down the channel.

Anyway, I should stop rambling and let you look at the photos, because as you will see, these guys are awesome! Check the bus out, and then look back at how good Em and Craig look. Must be the revitalising Cygnet air. Congratulations again you guys!

Just after Christmas I was whisked away to a little city called Melbourne. From there it was north to the amazing Boyd Baker House. A stunning venue for a very fun wedding. The wedding setting really made it a modern Australian bush wedding, perfect weather meant that the reception was held outside under the gum trees. Ali did a fantastic job doing many of the small details herself.

It wasn’t hard to shoot these guys and girls, they all looked fantastic and generally cracked each other up all the time. Some of Ali’s friends are serious life long friends, like known each other since they were 6. That is very cool.

One of the highlights include Jon Von Goes, the most entertaining celebrant I’ve had the fortune to see. He made the ceremony fun and did many things to really set the mood for the rest of the day.

The biggest highlight of the day was family. There are some very close bonds in these two families, this was one of the most welcoming weddings I’ve been to.

Congratulations again Adam and Ali and looking forward to meeting your little girl!

It’s catch up Batblog post time. Marcus and Natasha got married down at the French Hotel and it was one of the best ceremonies / receptions I’ve seen in ages. The ceremony was all about their story, family and friends. It included all the speeches by family and friends that are normally reserved for the evening and Marcus sang a song and Natasha gave Marcus a Legoman light key ring. The legal part was preformed by Marcus’s mun who is a real life celebrant. And I almost forgot to mention they all walked out to the band playing Rainbow Connection (Go Muppets!).

So if the ceremony wasn’t enough to rave about, then check out the details. TOYS! Having little “lego stations” around the reception so that everyone could make their own creations was a fantastic. But the crowning detail was the cake, a cake made of Lego complete with bride, groom and crane!

We played on a the famous Margate Train for some photos as well as about the amazing grounds and insides of D’Entrecasteaux, always a pleasure to shoot there, so many places for amazing shots.

The night finished with a fair amount of dancing and music. Marcus’s musical orientated friends and family got up and took turn in the band. Marcus also joined in on the bass for a few songs.

So this shoot may have almost been too much fun and the cool thing is that there is a wedding in the future with these too which i’m sure will push the fun into overdrive! Nick and Rhea came all the way from their little home in Japan for the shoot (they may have come to see family for Christmas and have an engagement party too, but i’m sure the engagment photography session was the main reason )

The plan, lets meet and Jackman and Ross. It was closed. So we just wandered the steets of Battery Point and took some awesome shots, had lots of laughs and generally had a very fun time.

This was a biggun’. 8 bridesmaids, 9 groomsmen but still only 1 bride and 1 groom! Em and Moosa’s wedding was one of the prettiest i’ve seen in a very long time. Flowers, flowers and even more flowers were arranged by Em’s mum at Kingsmeadows Flowers and they were fantastic.  What was also fun with this wedding was that I was shooting along side fellow photographer and friend Belinda Fettke. It’s going to be fun to see each others perspectives on the celebration.

So a quick rundown: Boys played at Em and Moosa’s place in the morning… only one slight incident involving a bottle of champagne and Moosa’s neck.

Girls played the getting hair and make up game at Alice’s cottages and there were people everywhere. It was crazy, kinda like the chrubs painted on the roof of the bedroom there. All the dresses were made byAlex Kranbousanos and suited thier girl so well.

Off to Franklin House for a bit of a meeting everyone, giving of rings (designed by Moosa and created by Guy at Jim Hughes and Sons) and that was followed by a bit of a kiss to seal the deal. Bit of mingleing, some photos and drinks then it was off to Cataract Bistro to witness one of the best dressed wedding receptions I’ve ever seen. Those flowers were everywhere and everyone of them looked fantastic.

Congratulations again Em and Moosa for your fantastic day and for your commitment to each other. Can’t wait to show you the rest of the shots!

I’m really enjoyed working with Michael and Camille, they are a nice Melbourne couple who decided that Tasmania would be a really great spot to get married. And a couple of weekend ago they did just that. Almost everyone at the wedding was an import and Tasmania put on a great bit of weather for them all.

The day started off with some guys getting their fill at Zum, where Michael’s son met us then off to Zero Davey to get all dressed and pretty. I took one of my favoutie ring shots ever there and enjoyed watching four grown men attempting to tie the same tie at the same time.

We found Camille all pretty in pink hanging out with some family and friends at the IXL apartments. I’d never been to the apartments, quite a spectacular entrance. The girls all chowed down on various nice things before being ushered out so Camille could get ready with her Mum. I like a different coloured wedding dress, Zakk describes this one as fairy floss pink, which is a little better than my descriptive attempt red pants left in the wash with the whites. It was a great pastel pink colour that really suited Camille.

When everyone was ready it was time to meet up before the wedding. Michael and Camille arranged some time for family photos and come couple shots before the ceremony. Of course, the family shots were slightly interrupted when Michael’s dad got into a spot of bother we a few thousand bikers (he got stuck in the toy run traffic). We found a heap of different spots around the water front and took some of my new favorite wedding shots. I really liked the portrait I took of Michael’s son Zak sitting on the floor in T42. We then met up with everyone to get on board Peppermint Bay II and head down to the ceremony at Peppermint Bay.

I’m lucky that in my job I get to spend heaps of time photographing people like these guys, they are so nice! Congrats again Michael and Camille

More up in a few days

Irene is from that big country called Canada and had a heap of her family down for the big day including a couple of sisters who turned out to be good bridesmaids Ben’s sister rounded out the trio of Bridesmaids adding some height to the party! The girls all got prepped down at the Lauceston Seaport, a great spot with Lush Hair to do the hair and Mud Club to do the make up and Peppers to get ready at. A general wedding tip, keep all the getting ready places close together as it makes the morning flow much easier.

Ben and his mates got up to all kinds of foolhardy activities in the morning including the unfortunate incident with the Sebel’s luggage trolley. These guys and girls were up for fun the whole day, and they didn’t disappoint.

Following the ceremony in the church it was into the stretched Hummer and off up the river to relax, do a bit of bridal party photography, play a little tease the photographer and a have a few drinks. We stopped a few times before getting to the always well set up Cataract Bistro for the reception. Of course, I was still after the killer shot the wrap up the day nicely and investigated around a little. I’m always up for challenging myself to find something different at places I’ve already photographed before and the last shot was a shot that I had not seen before but was glad to see it with Ben and Irene and that fantastic sky.

I love magazines; there are a few piles of them at home. I’m always excited when a new one arrives in the post office box. Today’s delivery was doubly exciting. Capture is a great read for photographers, covers a lot of interesting and important things relating to the industry of shooting everything in Australia. The current issue is their inaugural Annual filled with what Editor Marc Gaffen describes as “a selection of the finest work produced in the last 12 months.”
Heaps of good photos, including the one above taken at Brad and Elisha’s wedding. There were 5 wedding photos chosen for the annual and I got one of them. Quite exciting to get an image in there, I can’t imagine how many were submitted.
I’m off to buy these doggies some treats…

Matt and Megan’s friends and family gave the BATBOOTH quite a workout last weekend. Megan bought along some thing to dress up in too. Appologies to my Dad who does appear below too! If you want to see the rest of them get in touch with Matt and Megan for the magic link and password to all the wedding goodness!

More soon from this wedding… Matt is quite tall, maybe slightly exagerated in the photo, but close. This was a stylish wedding, and the photos of the food will make your mouth water, very impressive, espeially since Megan cooked them.

These guys decided to go away to get married, they choose Launceston which is about as far away as possible from their home in Halls Creek. They also bought along their family and friends from many other foreign parts (foreign being not Tasmania).

So many things that were different for these guys, we have grass, wind and we don’t have dust. Plus we also have fantastic places to get married like the superb Red Feather Inn, one of the prettiest venues in the state.

It must have been hard planning such a great wedding from that distance; they even had to stop off in Perth to pick up things to bring down. It was worth it, it all seemed to be fantastic. The kids were running around, beer and wine being drunk, Barb “Super Celebrant” Youd doing the ceremony and the sun out all day. There was even fake moustaches, wants and tiaras after the ceremony for everyone!

We headed off to take photos with “something that doesn’t look like Halls Creek”, the Longford area was nice and green providing a bit of a contrast.

And if you are ever up in Halls Creek, drop into the Kimberley Emporium and say hi to these guys.

3 Weeks Ago via phone…

Sam “Are you about to do some Batbooth photos at Simon’s 40 on the 19th of September”
Bat “Er… not really, I’m probably going to be in Perth”
Sam “Oh, OK… but there is something else happening”
Bat “What?”
Sam “I can’t tell you but we are having someone come along for 10 minutes and do something”
Bat “What kind of something?”
Sam “I can’t say but it would be great to have some photos of it”
Bat “Ahhh… I think I get what you are saying. I might have to change my flight plans”
Sam “Great!”
Bat “This is all very exciting!”

And the 19th has come, people showed up for Simon’s birthday party. There were drinks, BATBOOTH, cheese, dips and a surprise wedding. Yes, A SURPRISE WEDDING! So cool, I wasn’t told directly about it but did work it out. Sam and Simon have been together for ages and have even been wearing rings for ages. It was only when the plans for the birthday party were in place that they decided it would be the perfect time to get married.

It happened slowly with the celebrant sneaking in and suddenly making an announcement. Some people were onto it as soon as the celebrant arrived, others only realised when it was announced. There were tears, laughter and such a fantastic feeling in the room as Sam and Simon, surrounded by their kids, family and friends exchanged vows and rings.

Then it was back to the party!

I really enjoyed the look on the “late comers” who arrived after the ceremony.

Kangaroo Bluff is a great place for firing a canon. It’s not a bad place for an engagement portrait session either. That’s where Craig and Nyree come in. They are tying the knot next year and live not too far from this historic site, so it proved a great backdrop for their engagement session.

These guys were alot of fun to photograph, really playful, and so was Sprocket the award winning high jumping dog. I also met another main player in Craig’s life during the shoot, his car. No photo of the car as yet, saving those for the wedding post next year. It will be worth the wait, it’s a pretty cool car.

Isobel was the year below me at school, and I only really got to now her once school had finished and she started to mix with some of my other friends. Now she is engaged to a nice Scotsman and we are really looking forward to doing their wedding photography in January.

Our shoot location is down a backstreet in New Town. I managed to get a little lost looking for the café we were meeting in and luckily found this great little spot. It goes to show that getting lost does pay off.
We had a bit of a good time taking the photos, jumping on walls, wondering if we were tress passing and generally taking some good photos of good people. This wedding is going to be great, really looking forward to meeting the Scottish contingent because who doesn’t like a Scotsman (apart from the English, yes I saw Braveheart)

One of the best things about a wedding expo is meeting some of the other vendors, so when everyone rushes off to the fashion parade, we tend to wander about talk to each other. On wedding days it can be a little stressful to really talk to other people who are working, and the expo is the same sort of thing.

So last week celebrant and all round nice lady Barb Youd and I jumped in the car and headed out to the newly refurbished Quamby Estate. Quamby is an old homestead about 25 minutes west of Launceston on the old Bass Highway. The weather wasn’t very fantastic, but this place looks amazing in all kinds of weather and times of the year. All the trees look brilliant in summer with the breeze blowing through them.

It was quite popular for weddings a few years ago but with change of ownership they stopped for a while. Another change of hands and there is a refreshed new venue for weddings parties or just very nice place to stay.

From a wedding point of view there are so many options for getting ready, the ceremony and also the reception. Fantastic for a couple who want to keep everything in the one place. It’s probably been about 6 years since I shot a wedding there (would show  you the photos but I’d have to get a scan of the negatives!) and it still has the same charm and beautiful view.

This visit was the first time I had been inside the main house, and I was very impressed. If you are looking for a place with luxury and style this is it. I was reminded of the Henry Jones Art Hotel and also Islington.

I think the best spots for ceremonies would be out the front on the lawn with a grand entrance from the house, or even just to the front of the reception room in amongst the huge old trees. Another brilliant thing is that there is a wet weather option too, the gazebo like part of the reception area will be well as a back up.

A quick couple of shots from Saturday’s absolutly fantastic wedding down Hobart way. Some of the biggest smiles i’ve seen in ages!
Congratulations again Penny and Michael, you look fantastic and i’m having such a great time preparing your photos to show you. I hope you both have an absolutly amazing honeymoon!

One of the very cool things about winning Tasmanian Professional Photographer of the Year is the double page article that gets published in Bride Tasmania magazine. I was interviewed over the phone by one of their writers a few months ago and now the magazine is out and I can share the article with you. Hope you like it!

Last years wedding season was fantastic, I really pushed what we do here and as a result, came up with some really cool shots. So in getting ready for the next wedding photography season in Tasmania. We don’t have very many over winter, so it kinda starts in October and winds up in late April, early May.

Here are some of my favourite detail shots from the last wedding season.

I first entered the Australian Professional Photography Awards in 2001, and got nothing. I had no idea what I was doing back then, I had talked to a photographer and sent in what I had. So nothing came of it, the next year I was a bit more on the ball and picked up a couple of awards, and have been getting some ever since.

This year I received the honour of Master of Photography with 1 Gold Bar from The Australian Institute of Professional Photography. I was presented during the awards ceremony in Sydney with a gold bar to be added onto my Masters ribbon.

How this all works is that for every silver award you get one point and ever gold award you get two points. If you receive 5 points with in 4 years you become an Associate, I received this in 2003. The next step is that if you receive 10 additional points within five years you become a Master of Photography, I received this in 2006. From then every additional 10 points gained within 5 years gets you an Gold Bar.
